Artist Statement - Debbie Smith
My sculptures are informed by the organic and lively aesthetic of Japanese ceramics. Simple, elegant lines with a wabi-sabi nature of acceptance of the imperfect. Working in series allows me to explore ideas and shapes as they transform through repetition.. Often the groupings take on humanoid characteristics, dancing, nuzzling, singing, floating, whispering. Other times the pieces are simply studies of shape, light and shadow. My background in black and white photography comes through in the monotone palette; neutral tones allow me to focus on form and the interplay of space, line and shadow., bringing serenity to the work.
